One of the most common questions we get is “Should we get DVD or USB?” Both formats have a few pro’s and con’s but with decline of DVD player sales, USB is the most practical choice.
DVD: If you have a DVD player already connected to your television, a DVD is very simple to use. Simply pop it in and press play. The main drawback of the slowly dieing DVD format is that many households no longer incorporate DVD players in their television setups. If you do not have a DVD player, you have no alternate option to view your videos. Even computers are slowly removing DVD drives from their builds. In 2019, 28% of our conversions were from DVD to digital.
USB: Digital files are created as MP4 video files and offer a few different ways to view, including computers, smart phones, Ipads and smart televisions. Digital files on a USB Flash Drive can be viewed, transferred and shared very easily. Many modern smart TV’s allow you to simply insert the flash drive and play your videos. Digital files can also be shared with friends and family in a variety of different options such as social media, Dropbox, Youtube, create your own USB duplicates, etc.
Backup: One of the keys to digital media is backups. You can never have too many backups!! Physical media like DVD and/or USB instantly provides the first layer of backup. The fastest and easiest method of backup is USB Flash Drive and a great way to incorporate “redundant backups. Here is a great example of Redundant Backup, lets say you transferred some old home movies to digital and have 4 total family members in these home movies. Creating 4 copies on USB and distributing gives you a great redundant backup plan, especially if they reside in different homes.
Recap: If you have a DVD player and are primarily looking to view on your TV without sharing, DVD may be a good choice. If you do not have a DVD player, or looking to share your transfers and are a bit tech savvy, digital files on a USB Flash Drive may be your best bet.
